Salt was just the beginning of Syracuse's entrepreneurial
successes. The city once hosted an array of brew pubs and the manufacture
of typewriters, automobiles, tin, aluminium and steel products,
traffic signal lighting, medical instruments — even the world's
largest air conditioning units. Today, Syracusans produce everything
from ball bearings to computer-chip components.
The first solid evidence that the area would become a transportation
crossroads was the Erie Canal, which once passed through what is
now downtown Syracuse. Today, Syracuse is the hub of highways,
canals, railroads and airlines enhanced by sophisticated communications
systems. These features give Syracuse access to markets across
the state — and throughout the world.
