Education

The Central New York region is home to the third largest concentration of colleges and universities in the nation. There are 36 colleges and universities within a 100-mile radius of Onondaga County. Six of those are in the immediate Syracuse area and include Syracuse University, LeMoyne College, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Cazenovia College, and Onondaga Community College.

Central New York is also home to five public vocational centers and 24 private vocational and technical schools which provide more than 80 courses of study in a variety of fields.

For elementary and secondary education there are a variety of public and private options. Onondaga County has approximatley 80,000 students enrolled in18 public school districts. The districts are comprised of 78 elementary, 27 junior high and 21 high schools. Syracuse metro area public schools spend $8,650 per student, well above the national average school expenditure of $5,678. The graduation rate for Onondaga County high schools' 5year cohort is above 80%. Onondaga County is also served by 10 private high schools and 29 private elementary schools.

Syracuse's Say Yes to Education program provides comprehensive support and financial services, including the promise of college tuition to qualifying high school students.  The city's Say Yes to Education program is the first city-wide chapter in the U.S.

SUNY ESF in the High School and ESF Science Corps help students prepare to be leaders in the stewardship of both our natural and designed environments.

Local initatives, such as Success by Six, lead by a coalition of the United Way of Central New York, Childcare Solutions and the Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County, ensure that Onondaga County's youngest residents have access to quality care and early education - a key factor in building a thriving community and exemplary workforce.
